Artist Reflections
I ascended to the top of the ancient fortress Masada in hopes of capturing the grandeur of this meeting point between the Dead Sea and the Judean hills. I searched for the best view and eventually found myself standing in the ‘Northern Palace’ of King Herod. I planned to photograph the scene just as the sun was setting so that the rays would reflect off the tips of the cliffs and give them the shining glow that is seen in this photo. At that moment standing in the king’s palace, overlooking this drama of light and landscape, I felt powerful; I felt elevated; I felt like royalty. This experience up on Masada gave me new perspective on the Torah’s frequent description of Hashem as King. Hashem created this world to be His dwelling place. If we open our hearts to the majesty of the world around us, we have the opportunity to step into the palace of the true King at any moment.
