Artist Reflections

Standing within this tranquil forest, I was confronted by individual trees, close, immediate, so tall that it was impossible to hold an entire tree within my sight. Simultaneously, my gaze was drawn forward and around, into the endless range and depth of the forest - trees forming patterns of space and life, light and dark surrounding me and receding into the distance. This striking composition of the vertical individual and the horizontal collective brought me to reflect on my relationship between the self and the whole. By surrounding myself with individuals, trees, who can be so clearly seen to enhance their existence by contributing to a larger collective, I remind myself that my own individual essence, too, emerges from my intentions and actions for the greater good.
