The Talmud relates that a person who completes a journey through the desert says a special blessing expressing gratitude to Hashem. Today, while the landscape maintains the appearance it has had for generations, the danger involved in crossing the desert is not as it was in the time of the Talmud. However, at times in our lives we still encounter experiences which, like desert crossings, fill us with a sense of remoteness and vulnerability. This blessing from the Talmud can encourage us, teaching that these moments of exposure and fear have the potential to make us more true to ourselves in our connection to Hashem. Once we pass beyond these trials, we can develop our sense of gratitude by reflecting back on them from within the security of our current situation.
