Having worked with dozens of collectors over the years, we know there are so many factors on your mind when deciding on an artwork to invest in. One of the main questions that comes up is: How do I choose the right size?
The answer certainly isn’t a “one size fits all” solution, because truthfully every space is different and worthy of individual attention. However, this guide should hopefully get you started in the right direction.
When choosing an artwork size for your home or office, here are a few pointers to consider:
1. Measure Your Wall
Don't know where to start? Have a measuring tape in hand and begin by measuring both the width and height of the wall where you want the artwork displayed.
2. Keep in Mind the Correlating Furniture
When hanging artwork above a piece of furniture, there are two main factors to consider:
a) Placement. If there is furniture directly correlating with the wall the artwork will be hanging on, we typically advise our collectors to center their art pieces over the furniture as opposed to centering it on the entire wall.
b) Proportions. To create balance and harmony, consider the size of your sofa, table, or console and keep the total dimensions of the piece to about ⅔-¾ of the width of the furniture.
3. Identify the Placement
Keep in mind where on the wall you will be hanging the artwork. It’s generally best to hang artwork at the average human eye level, which works out to about 57-60 inches (145-153cm) from the floor to the center of the piece.
If you are installing the artwork directly over a piece of furniture, consider both the height of the furniture as well as the ceiling. As a general rule of thumb, you can plan to leave at least 4-6 inches/10-15cm between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the artwork.
